Youth Basketball

It’s no surprise our Youth Basketball program is offered in partnership with the Los Angeles Clippers®. After all, did you know that basketball was founded at the Y? James Naismith, a teacher at the international YMCA training school, invented the sport in 1891!

Through positive coaching, our Jr. Clippers Youth Basketball program teaches young athletes the fundamentals of the game while building their confidence, getting them active, and helping them learn valuable lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership.

Our Jr. Clippers Basketball program and basketball leagues run year-round and are open to both boys and girls. We make sure each child participates in every game and receives equal playing time, regardless of skill level.

In addition to practices and league play, Jr. Clippers participants receive many unique opportunities, including FREE basketball clinics hosted by the LA Clippers.

Play together. Grow together.

When is the basketball season?

Each team will practice one hour per week with games on Saturdays, with the exception of Division 5 (ages 15-17). All practices will be held at the Westside Family YMCA. Games in Divisions 1-4 will be held at the Y on Saturdays. Games in Division 5 will be held at the Y on Sunday afternoons.

Who can play?
Open to boys and girls ages 6-17.

What is required?

  • Completed registration packet.
  • Registration fee payable to YMCA.
  • Participants should wear athletic attire and basketball shoes to practice and games.

Will you honor any special requests?
In an effort to form balanced teams, we will accommodate requests to the best of our ability while still maintaining competitive teams.

What can I expect from the league?
The YMCA strives to provide the best basketball experience possible for its participants. Focus is on teamwork, fair play and skill development. We have excellent volunteer coaches and parents and quality referees. Age groups and genders may be combined to accommodate league participants. We work hard to make balanced teams and provide divisions with safe and fair competition.
