When you work at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring a change in people’s lives. As a Group Exercise Instructor, you will proactively manage the Y membership experience by interacting positively with members, staff, and guests.

Hours and Salary

$16.00-$25.00/hr, part-time.
Monday 9 am, Tuesday 9 am, Wednesday 8 am, Thursday 9 am, Friday 8 am

EDUCATION: High school diploma; Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field preferred. CERTIFICATIONS: Group Exercise certificate from a nationally recognized certifying board (NASM, ACE, AFFA, NFCA, or ACSM) required. Certifications need to be maintained. SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong character values; communication skills. RELATED EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working in the fitness/sports industry preferred. 


• Create a welcoming environment in all YMCA program areas taking time to talk to members and enthusiastically greet them by name with a smile and eye contact.
• Model and enforce Code of Conduct, Healthy Living Policies, and administrate member issues as they arise. Positively interpret these policies to members.
• Actively interact with members regarding their participation in YMCA programs, Annual Support Campaign, and Special Events.
• Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
• Warmly and enthusiastically greet members with a smile and eye contact. Be aware of member’s needs and make an effort to approach them before they approach you. Anticipate their needs.
• Personalize relationships with members by introducing yourself and asking the name of each member with whom you come into contact. Make a point of remembering member names and use them frequently. When the opportunity arises introduce members to other members or to fellow staff.
• Understand and be able to discuss and promote all YMCA programs.
• Be flexible and adaptable in order to accommodate members’ needs and wants.
• Be able to answer member’s questions, concerns, and complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
• Be able to effectively problem solve, taking full responsibility to remedy the situation and follow through to its completion.
• Always conveys a positive attitude when interacting with members, or in the presence of members.
• Make yourself available to all members regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level.
