New Family and Youth Locker Rooms Coming Soon!

*** Special needs pool door full access expected week of March 15. See below for more.

Exciting news for members - renovations are underway for new youth and family locker rooms:

You asked and we listened! We are renovating the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms. The downstairs will become a family locker room and will be available to moms, dads and their children under 16 years old. It will include private changing rooms and bathrooms. This will allow parents with children of the opposite gender to use the changing room together. The upstairs locker room will be split to accommodate separate girls’ and boys’ locker rooms which will function as they currently do.

Construction Update

We passed the city's inspection for water test in the showers Tuesday, March, 9, 2010. Tiling is starting March 9 and to take about 2 1/2 weeks. Plaster work is finishing in some areas. The Aquatics office & hallway entrance to the pool may be re-opened the week of March 15. Moisture from the pool area is extending drying time for plaster.

The construction should be finished in Spring 2010. During this time children may use the Women’s and Men’s locker room. If you or your children are uncomfortable using the adult locker rooms, please feel free to use the cabanas that are located off the pool deck on the pool patio. You can count on us to keep you well informed about what is coming up, and have staff available to direct you in the right direction. Our fitness facilities, programs and other services will be in operation as they are every day.

No Increase in Membership Fees!

The funding for this project comes from our Repair and Replacement Reserve which is funded by the joining fees that we collect when a member signs up for membership. In addition, the Torrance Y’s Men’s Club, a volunteer service club, has generously contributed $50,000 to help defray the cost.

Just a few reminders:

  • Since the adult locker rooms may be used by children, please be discreet whenever possible.
  • Children under 12 always require parental supervision when not in a supervised program at the YMCA.
  • Children under 6 may use the opposite gender locker room with their parent.
  • Some parents may wish to change their children before arriving at the YMCA and take their children home after swim lessons to shower and change, during this brief time.
  • The special needs locker room and cabanas are other options available for those who do not want to use our adult locker rooms.
  • Handicapped individuals used to using the pool entrance door may have to check in at the front desk and then use the outside pool door to enter during part of the construction.
