Model United Nations (MUN)
In our Torrance-South Bay YMCA Youth and Government Model United Nations Program Presented by American Honda (Y&G MUN), middle school students learn about current affairs, politics, economics and diplomacy through weekly meetings. The Y&G MUN program is part of our California Y Youth & Government program, which began in 2001 and is the largest in the nation.
If you have a child who’s interested in the political process and wants to learn more about international relations, diplomacy, and critical thinking, our Y&G MUN program is an ideal extracurricular activity for them.
Students, called “ambassadors”, participate in the program with their peers. Student delegates receive an up-close and personal understanding of how our government works by being empowered to:
- Give public speeches
- Debate international issues
- Participate in committees
- Attend statewide social events and dances
The four-month program culminates in May when delegates from around the state meet to establish their own student-run United Nations.
Not only are these great programs to help kids develop friendships, leadership and critical thinking, but also they learn that that their voice is powerful and, together, they can make a difference.
