Diabetes Prevention Program
Diabetes effects 1 in 10 Los Angeles County residents costing an estimated $6 billion each year. It is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve disease. Many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be avoided if discovered and treated early. This is known as pre-diabetes, which is seen in about 79 million American adults. Pre-diabetes is, in most cases, is a reversible condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal. People with pre-diabetes are likely to develop Type 2 diabetes within 10 years, unless preventative action is taken, and that is where the LA YMCA can help.
