Keeping Our Community Together

Hello Westchester Family YMCA community!

First, I want to thank our SENIOR SUPPORT TEAM, an amazing group of volunteers who are connecting and checking in with our seniors.  We are grateful for your care and compassion and for helping us to call ALL 800 YMCA members who are 60 years plus.  Thanks to our convening of the Senior Support Coalition, we were able to refer about 100 of our members to specific support (i.e. groceries, prepared meals, prescription pickups).  The response by both members and volunteers has been overwhelmingly positive. I thought I would share some of the comments I have heard from volunteers and members that have really warmed my heart and helped recharge my batteries:

“I am literally crying right now.  You thought you were asking me to help out; little did I know that I was going to be the beneficiary of speaking with these YMCA members.  I am so uplifted by spending time on the phone with strangers – who are now friends!!!”

“Volunteering is a two-way street.  It helps me more than you know.”

“I will be glad when the gym opens again...My health is very good thanks to the YMCA's low fee for people like me.  It has saved my life.  As you see on the news, often Brown and Black people are more susceptible to diseases than other races, including Caucasians.  At the YMCA there is only one race, Healthy!!”

Our volunteer team is making a profound impact in the lives of those we are connecting with.  For many, you are one of the few people reaching out a helping hand and connecting them to much needed services – THANK YOU!  We couldn’t do it without you.

If you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering, please contact me at 310-981-5347 or JohnLoussararian@ymcaLA.org, or visit our online volunteer page.

Both our shower program and our blood drives are running smoothly and providing critical resources.  I recently shared at our virtual board of manager meeting that our work is challenging my pre-conceived notions about our friends and neighbors who are unsheltered.  This opportunity to learn and grow in the midst of a global health crisis is something I will not soon forget.

Lastly, I’m excited to share that we have successfully launched a $3M campaign for the Y’s Emergency Community Impact Fund in response to this pandemic.  This comes on the heels of a $1M matching fund commitment from a member of the LA Y’s board of directors who will personally match your investment in the Emergency Community Impact Fund dollar for dollar.  Please join my wife Jennipher and me in contributing toward our Covid-19 relief efforts at Westchester, moreover throughout Los Angeles, at the ymcaLA.org/EmergencyFund

In service,
