2nd Annual Youth Institute Film Festival: Teens Take the Spotlight

On August 2nd, the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles proudly hosted the 2nd Annual Youth Institute Film Festival at the historic Laemmle Theater in North Hollywood. This year’s festival was a celebration of creativity, leadership, and youth empowerment—bringing together over 300 guests to witness the incredible work of our young filmmakers.

A Summer of Growth and Creativity

More than 90 youth from across Los Angeles participated in this year’s seven-week Youth Institute summer program. The journey began with a week-long wilderness retreat, where teens built lasting friendships, developed team skills, and explored their leadership potential.

Back in the city, the participants channeled their creativity into producing original works. Each youth was given the opportunity to create their own magazine and short film, learning valuable technical and storytelling skills along the way. In recognition of their hard work, every participant also earned a $400 stipend, ensuring that their dedication was both celebrated and supported.

The Big Night at Laemmle Theater

The Film Festival was the culmination of an unforgettable summer. Families, friends, and community members gathered to watch the youth’s short films on the big screen. The evening began with a lively reception at the Mid Valley Family YMCA, where guests connected, shared excitement, and celebrated the teens’ accomplishments before heading into the theater.

With over 300 guests in attendance, the event buzzed with energy as participants proudly introduced their films and shared reflections on their summer journey.

Award-Winning Films

The evening also featured special recognition for outstanding storytelling and production. Two films took home the Best Film Award:

– “Gabriel: A Minecraft Story” – created by the talented youth of the Weingart East LA Youth Institute Program

– “Regrets” – produced by the dedicated team at the Mid Valley Youth Institute

Both films showcased the creativity, resilience, and vision of our teens, leaving the audience inspired and deeply moved.

Building Belonging and Leadership Through the Arts

At the LA Y, our mission is to build a community where all youth can belong, grow, and lead. The Youth Institute is more than just a summer program—it’s a life-changing experience where teens gain confidence, explore new passions, and discover the power of their voices.

The 2nd Annual Youth Institute Film Festival was not just a showcase of films, but a testament to the potential of young people when given the tools, mentorship, and space to shine.
