Youth Protection and Child Abuse Prevention
Child safety is our top priority.
We believe that every child deserves to be in an environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and nurturing setting.
We are committed to preventing child abuse by implementing strict safety policies, providing comprehensive staff training, and empowering families with the tools and resources to recognize and report concerns.
Below, you’ll find parent information and resources on abuse prevention.
Screening and Selection
All employees and volunteers undergo a comprehensive screening process prior to working with children. This includes a structured interview process, thorough reference checks, and careful evaluation to ensure alignment with the YMCA’s commitment to child safety and well-being.
Background Checks and Ongoing Monitoring
All employees and volunteers are required to complete a criminal background check before working with children. In addition, background screenings are continuously monitored on an ongoing basis to help ensure immediate awareness and response.
Training
Child abuse prevention training is required for all YMCA employees and volunteers and is reinforced through annual renewal. These trainings establish clear standards of conduct, build awareness of warning signs, and ensure that staff and volunteers are equipped to prevent, recognize, and respond to abuse in alignment with YMCA safety standards.
Reporting Concerns
The YMCA takes every allegation or concern of abuse very seriously. Should a concern arise, we are committed to responding promptly, thoroughly, and with care, working in full cooperation with appropriate authorities and all parties involved.
Families are encouraged to report concerns to a program supervisor or site management, as they are often best positioned to respond quickly. However, concerns can be reported through any available channel. We provide an additional reporting option on this page to ensure that all individuals have a safe, accessible, and comfortable way to share concerns.
Standards of Conduct
The YMCA has zero tolerance for child abuse. All employees and volunteers are required to follow established standards of conduct that reinforce appropriate boundaries, respectful interactions, and a shared responsibility to protect children.
Partnership in Prevention
The YMCA partners with Praesidium, a recognized leader in abuse prevention and risk management. With decades of research and expertise, this partnership helps the Y implement comprehensive, evidence-informed practices across screening, training, supervision, and reporting to support the highest standards of child safety.

The safety and well-being of every child is our highest priority. If you have a concern about possible abuse, neglect, or inappropriate behavior, we encourage you to report it.
You do not need proof that abuse is occurring to make a report, only reasonable suspicion. Reasonable suspicion may include witnessing concerning behavior, observing boundary violations, or receiving a disclosure from a child about abuse or neglect.
For faster, immediate attention, concerns may be reported directly to a program supervisor or center management. However, concerns can be reported through any available channel. You may also use the form below to report a concern directly to the YMCA.
If a child is in immediate danger, please call 911. Reports of suspected child sexual abuse should be made directly to local law enforcement and/or your state’s child protective services agency.
All reports are taken seriously and handled with care, confidentiality, and a commitment to child safety.
