Art Therapy: Supports Healing and Builds Connection
In the aftermath of devastating wildfires, communities face not only physical rebuilding but emotional recovery as well. Our recent "Together We Heal" art therapy workshop demonstrated the powerful impact of creative expression in helping families process trauma, rebuild connection, and find hope amid loss.
Together We Heal: Art Therapy in Action
Our "Together We Heal" workshop offered a FREE supportive art therapy session for families affected by recent wildfires. This specialized two-hour workshop provided a safe, nurturing environment where families with children ages 6+ could:
- Create meaningful art together as a family
- Express feelings through guided creative activities
- Connect with others who understand their experience
- Learn practical coping strategies through art
Participants took home tangible reminders of their strength and resilience, including personal artwork, vision boards, hope stones, and strength bracelets—along with simple techniques for continuing healing at home.
The Colorful Minds Program: Ongoing Support
While our "Together We Heal" workshop showcased the impact of art therapy in crisis response, our Colorful Minds Art Therapy Program offers ongoing support through multiple sessions at the Torrance South Bay YMCA. This comprehensive program builds on the same therapeutic principles with a 5-week curriculum addressing: Feeling My Feelings, Managing Emotions, Coping Skills, Taking Care of Me, and Connecting With Others.
The program serves both children (ages 8-12) and teens (ages 13-17) with age-appropriate activities and discussions. No artistic experience is necessary—just an openness to explore, create, and heal together.
Based on its success, we are happy to announce that we will be expanding the program to multiple YMCA locations.

Professional Support
Our workshops and programs are led by trained mental health professionals who understand both the therapeutic power of art and the profound benefits of creative expression for emotional health. Through art, participants can process complex feelings in a healthy, non-verbal way—often accessing emotions that might be difficult to express with words alone. This professional guidance ensures participants receive appropriate support while discovering the healing potential of their own creativity.
