Improve Your Workout By Making This Change
To get the most from your workout, this cue from nature can help you get the results you want. Like spring turns into summer, simply change.*
While it’s great to find a routine you love, results will plateau as your body adapts to that exercise. There’s also a greater risk for injury, as the same routine can overexert certain muscle groups, not giving them adequate time to recover between workouts. Finally, there’s a chance for motivation burnout, as you may grow bored by the very workout you once loved.
The great news is Y members have ample opportunity to mix things up in a safe and enjoyable setting. At the Y, we offer a variety of options to keep you motivated and on track to achieve your goals, including these workouts that were among ACSM’s (American College of Sports Medicine) top exercise trends.
HIIT – High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) incorporates short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by a slower-paced recovery period. For example, participants might alternate between a 15-30 second sprint with a 45-60 second walk. The workouts are time-efficient and effective.
Group Exercise Classes – Offering a variety of options and intensity levels, our group exercise classes range from cycling to cardio dance, boot camp, yoga and more. Inspiring instructors, great music and the camaraderie of a group setting can help keep you motivated and accountable as you work towards your goal.
Bodyweight Training – Bodyweight training dates back centuries. Every bodyweight exercise utilizes multiple muscle groups, gets your heart rate pumping and burns tons of calories.
Strength Training – While cardio workouts will shed pounds during your workout, strength training, which includes free weights and machines, adds bone density and increases your metabolic rate allowing your body to burn fat all day long.
Although our bodies like consistency and repetition, changing your routine can stimulate new muscle groups, prevent boredom and keep you excited about exercise. If you aren’t sure how to mix up your workout, simply check-in with our YMCA Healthy Lifestyles team for assistance.
