Tobias Harris is Bigger than Basketball
Weingart YMCA Wellness & Aquatic Center received a special visit from Los Angeles Clippers forward Tobias Harris. Joined by 30 young men from the Tobias’ Troops Mentorship program, Harris distributed 250 turkeys to families in need.
“Having Tobias Harris provide the main course of their meal will certainly be a fun topic of conversation over Thanksgiving dinner for our families,” said Scottie Biggers, Executive Director of Weingart YMCA Wellness & Aquatic Center. “But truly, the warmth and generosity Tobias extended, along with the positive impression he made on our kids, are what we, at the Y, are most grateful for this holiday.”
Harris has garnered several community awards over the course of his NBA career and since joining the Clippers, has attended community events across Los Angeles. Tobias’ Troops works with schools and community service agencies to inspire youth in California, Florida, New York, Michigan and Connecticut.
Since 2015, the Los Angeles Clippers have been an official partner of YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (LA Y). The team is actively engaged in the LA Y’s Jr. Clippers youth basketball program and supports several YMCA community-building events. Recently, the team welcomed nearly 1,000 LA Y families, staff and volunteers to watch a Los Angeles Clippers game at STAPLES Center.
“It’s been awesome being here, especially with my mentees, to do something like this,” said Tobias Harris. “It means a lot. To give these turkeys away to people in need and see the smiles on families’ faces is the true meaning of Thanksgiving.”
From his efforts to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others, it appears the size of Tobias’ heart is even bigger than his 6’9” frame.
